Halloween 2019 with Staffs DA at Gentleshaw

It might have been Staffs DA’s last meet of the year but what an fantastic weekend, with almost 40 units out.  Considering the weather, this was nothing short of amazing!

Friday afternoon saw the rain start and stewards Ken and Karen were kept busy as lots arrived early to try and avoid the worst of it.  As we’re settling down, a trailer tent rocks up and it quickly becomes apparent it is need of help…  and there’s quickly a team of campers helping to hold it down while it is pegged out.  Phew!   Motorhomers & caravanners quickly retired to the warmth of their units with some of the more hardy (!) venturing out to one of the local pubs.

The rain hammered on our roofs all of Friday night and it settled in for Saturday.  More units arrived though in time for the pumpkin carving and Halloween craft making in the hall.  It was quickly packed out with fun had by all.   The advertised “well drained field” was not so well draining it appears, with the grass poking through pools of water…  wellies were the order of the day.  Local news reported lots of roads closed due to flooding- but we didn’t care…

Saturday evening and we had our world famous annual Halloween party which starts with the “trick or treat” procession around the vans (THE RAIN HAD STOPPED YAY!), coupled with the best decorated unit competition.  Kids came back loaded down with sweets (sorry parents!).   The hall opened, the fancy dress parade started, winners chosen, American supper, surprise “Happy Birthday” for Natalie….and then onto the music & dancing.  Everyone enjoyed themselves and was sorry to see the evening end.  Cracking job from Ian as MC, Matt on the tunes, kids on the dancefloor!

Sunday – wow, what a difference a day makes.  The sun was out, solar panels working hard to replenish the energy used in the last 36 hours, folk milling about in the sunshine, packing away dry awnings.  Coffee morning and prize giving (more chocolates!).

We’ve had campers from lots of DAs, fantastic to see so many visitors.  A couple of new caravanners (hard core first outings) and lots of “can’t wait till next year” conversations.  Also great to speak to so many of our new committee members who are really excited  to be part of what will surely be the best DA in the club in 2020!
